Cables and Chargers Explained

Cables and chargers look simple, and that is exactly why people buy the wrong ones. Two cables that look identical can charge at very different speeds, and a powerful adapter can seem slow with the wrong cable. This guide explains the basics in plain language so you can buy once and be done.

The charger, the cable and the device

Charging is a negotiation between three parts. The charger offers power, the cable carries it and the device decides how much it will accept. The slowest part limits the result. A strong charger with a weak cable charges slowly; a good cable with a basic charger charges at the basic speed; and a device can only take what its own circuitry allows.

Watts, volts and amps

You will see these numbers on chargers. In simple terms, watts measure the total power. A small phone charger may be around 10 to 20 watts, a fast phone charger higher, and a laptop needs more. A 65W charger, like our 65W Fast Charger, has enough power for many laptops and can also charge phones and tablets, delivering only what each device asks for. More watts does not mean it will damage a smaller device; a device only draws what it needs.

USB-C: the common shape

USB-C is the small, reversible connector found on most new phones, tablets and laptops. The shape is shared, but what happens through it varies. Some USB-C cables carry only slow charging; others support fast charging and data transfer. Look for cables labelled with their power rating and speed. A well-made cable, like the Braided USB-C Cable, available in 1 m and 2 m lengths, is built for repeated bending and daily use.

Length matters

Longer cables lose a little power and can charge slightly slower, which is why a short cable is better for fast charging at your desk. A longer one is more convenient beside the bed or across a sofa. Many people keep one of each. Avoid very long, thin cables for high-power charging.

Data versus charging

If you transfer files from a phone to a computer, or connect an external drive such as the 1TB Portable SSD, you need a cable that supports data at good speed. A charge-only cable will power the device but not move files quickly, or at all. If a drive seems slow, check the cable before blaming the drive.

Adapters and hubs

Modern laptops have few ports, so a hub is often the answer. A 4-Port USB-C Hub turns one port into several, making it simple to connect a mouse, a drive and a phone. Keep in mind that everything connected shares the available power and bandwidth, so avoid plugging in a dozen demanding devices at once.

Signs of a bad cable or charger

  • It gets very hot in normal use.
  • Charging stops and starts when you touch the cable.
  • The connector is loose, bent or discoloured.
  • The insulation is frayed or cracked.
  • Your device says it is charging slowly with an otherwise powerful charger.

If you see any of these, replace the cable. Do not repair frayed cables with tape.

Why we suggest quality accessories

An unbranded, very cheap charger may skip important safety features such as over-voltage and temperature protection. Pakistani power conditions, with spikes and outages, make those protections more valuable. A good charger is a small expense compared with replacing a phone. If a device is damaged by an unsuitable accessory, it can also affect your warranty options, as explained in our warranty guide.

How to pick the right setup

  1. Check what your phone or laptop supports for fast charging.
  2. Choose a charger with equal or higher wattage.
  3. Pick a cable rated for that power and a length you will use.
  4. Add a surge protector for desks with several chargers.

Travelling light

If you carry a laptop, a phone and earbuds, a single multi-port or high-wattage charger plus one or two good cables replaces a pile of bricks. You will also have fewer cables to lose. Pack cables loosely rather than wrapping them tightly around the adapter, which stresses the cable near the connector.
